Steamboat Classic 2015

June 2015Anna LockeComment

Happy Monday! And happy official summer! I can't believe we've made it past the summer solstice, it's always kind of depressing to know the days are getting shorter and shorter again, isn't it? But let's not even worry about that because there is so much life to soak up this season!

To be honest, I'm losing track of the days because Ben is on summer break and we've been so busy traveling. Being able to work from anywhere and have complete control over my schedule is freaking awesome and I'm so grateful I decided to take the leap and work for myself. Tonight we're actually headed to the airport and flying to Amsterdam to spend a long week in Holland visiting family, but I wanted to share a quick life update here on the blog before we leave!

I always love leaving the hustle and bustle of the city for the peace and quiet of "downstate" Illinois. This weekend we picked up my friend and teammate Katie and drove down to my hometown (Chillicothe/Peoria) for a big running event that my dad helps direct, the Steamboat Classic. There's a 4 mile and 15k race, a 2 mile walk, and tons of parties and events along with it for the volunteers, race committee, and family. I've grown up with this event but never really participated until the last few years as I've slowly gotten more and more into running and fitness!

This year my dad let Katie and me set up a table at the race expo, so on Friday we hung out at the downtown fitness center's gym for nine hours passing out Shakeology samples and talking to people about what we do as Beachbody coaches! It was a great experience and a huge comfort zone buster for both of us. I also was able to officially decide that vegan chocolate Shakeology is my favorite flavor, and that yes there is such thing as drinking too much Shakeo in one day...

On Saturday we were up bright and early to head back downtown for the race itself! Both of my sisters, Katie, Ben, my dad, and I all ran the 4 mile. This was a big race for me personally because I've worked through such enormous mental blocks over the past year and have actually been able to become a faster runner by learning how to push my limits and become resilient to the little voices in my head that hold me back. I have Shaun T to thank ;)

I haven't really been running much lately and didn't officially train for the race so I had no idea what to expect, but decided to show up and give it my best shot. I completely surprised myself by finishing with an official time of 31:02, over a 5 minute PR on my 4 mile time and an average pace of around 7:45/mile!!!

This is the same girl who used to walk the mile in PE, finished last in track and cross country meets in college, and never felt like I'd ever measure up to my own expectations or be able to feel like a "legit" runner.

Major. Victory.

Side note: my little sister Nicole is getting so big! She's going into high school this year and I'm so proud of her!

Katie fits right into the family, haha.

On Saturday night we headed out on the Illinois River on this gorgeous old paddle boat for a dinner cruise with the rest of the race committee, volunteers, top athletes, and family. There has been so much rain and flooding lately that no other boats are allowed out right now so we felt really special and VIP!

This boat reminds me of the Disney movie The Rescuers...I think it's something about the smokestacks. Did you ever watch that movie?

It was a great weekend, full of the perfect blend of work, play, friends, and family.

I'm feeling extra grateful and blessed for this life I'm creating and all the people in it!

See you from Holland :)

Health and Fitness Coaching for Beginners!

June 2015Anna LockeComment
health and fitness coaching for beginners

I am super excited to be launching a new adventure: long-term health and fitness coaching for BEGINNERS !!!

As you probably know, I’ve been running online health and fitness accountability groups as a Beachbody coach for over a year now, and have been able to help almost 200 women on their weight loss journeys by using at-home fitness programs and simple, portion control meal plans.

I open my challenge groups to anyone, with any goal and from every walk of life, but I’m realizing that when you’re JUST getting started or have a significant amount of weight to lose, it can be really intimidating at first. It's hard for me to meet the needs of everyone in one group, since our goals and struggles are so personal.

Plus once the group ends, everyone drifts off and it's hard to maintain results.

So I have a BIG DREAM of running a longer term (3+ month) challenge group EXCLUSIVELY for women who are brand new to healthy eating and fitness and/or have long term weight loss and health goals.

Women who are ready to commit, put in the work, invest in themselves, and literally change their own lives.

Women who are ready to completely OVERHAUL their habits one step at a time, and make healthy their "default."

+ New moms who want to find themselves again.

+ Empty-nesters or friends of my mom who feel like they are "too old" for my regular challenges

+ Women who have tried diets in the past but haven’t found one that keeps the weight off, who might have 30 or 50+ pounds to lose and are intimidated by even thinking about it.

+ Women who are busy, who want more energy or need to lower their blood pressure, who want a SUSTAINABLE and do-able plan that will also meet the needs of your hectic schedule and family.

+ Women who have tried everything and are super skeptical that they'll be able to actually get results and keep the weight off.

+ Women who want to HAVE FUN learning how to eat healthy and get fit!

I want to take away the intimidation factor and make the process fun by providing a safe, welcoming, private Facebook community of other women who are all starting at ground zero together.

I'll teach you the basics of healthy eating, how to meal plan and grocery shop, what a balanced diet looks like using the 21 Day Fix portion control plan, how to set up your schedule so that you can overhaul your health from the inside out.

I'll provide emotional support through the process as you break-up with the old you and redefine yourself.

Is Shakeology Worth It?

June 2015Anna LockeComment
is shakeology worth it?

I’ve been running online health and fitness challenge groups for over a year now, which I can hardly believe! I’ve helped over 200 women get started (or stay motivated) on their weight loss journeys, and I’ve been able to watch them achieve profound, life changing results when they're willing to put in the work to change not only their bodies but their self confidence and sense of self worth. I'm talking not just crazy transformative 50+ pound weight loss, but I’ve watched women overcome and heal from chronic health issues, quit their soul sucking jobs and land their dream job, move to new cities to start a new phase, find themselves in the process, and literally change their own lives.

My challenge groups provide a trifecta of success: fitness, support, and nutrition.

Fitness is the obvious one. If you workout, you’ll change your body and feel better, and Beachbody programs work.

Support is also pretty obvious. Surround yourself with other like-minded women in an environment of positivity and accountability, and you’ll stick to your goals!

Nutrition is tricky though. While there’s really no such thing as “bad fitness” if you’re making an effort to move your body in some way, I feel like almost everyone struggles with eating right. Poor nutrition accounts for so many medical issues in our society today. High blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and obesity are the obvious ones, but how about low energy, mood swings, clinging onto the last 10 pounds despite killing yourself at the gym, or getting sick with a cold every other month?

The fact is, you can workout for hours a day and burn thousands of calories, but you can un-do all your hard work with just one meal! It’s the choices you make in the remaining 20 hours of the day that will make or break your results and ultimately your health. It’s not hard to learn how to eat healthy, but it is hard to give your body the perfect amount of nutrients and fuel that it needs to both keep you energized and allow your body to shed excess fat in a healthy, sustainable way.

What you put into your body is so much more important than working out.

Shakeology FAQ

Enter: Shakeology

I get questions about Shakeology all the time so I figured it’s high time I wrote a post about it!

To be honest, I didn’t know exactly what Shakeology was when I became a coach, other than that it was a super healthy superfood and protein meal replacement shake. My friend Deidre gave me a sample, I instantly fell in love with the chocolatey goodness and couldn’t imagine my life without it, so I started drinking it every day a little over a year ago. I’ve learned so much since then!

Here's why I love it, and answers to some of my FAQ's:

Why I love Shakeology

-It’s freaking delicious

-It kills my sugar cravings! (And I'm a froyo addict)

-It gives me so much energy

-I haven’t been sick with a cold in as long as I can remember. December 2013??

-It’s so convenient! When I'm in a rush I can blend up a smoothie and get a complete meal on the go.

-It covers my bases when I’m traveling or can’t control what I eat. I know I’m at least getting all my vitamins and nutrients in!

-I FEEL better when I drink it. I can’t even explain.

-It helps my digestive system, I don’t have random tummy issues anymore.

How is it different from protein powder?

Shakeology was designed to be different and better than the standard protein powders on the market, created for health conscious person who know they need something more than just protein. The truth is, protein alone isn’t enough to keep you healthy. Your body desperately needs other stuff like fiber, minerals, vitamins, antioxidants, phytonutrients, superfoods, adaptogen herbs, prebiotics, and digestive enzymes (just to name a few) to run at optimum capacity. You could spend more than $700 on supplements, just to re-create all the healthy ingredients in one bag of Shakeology.

While it does have protein, it’s not a protein shake. Most of us aren’t actually protein deficient at all, and it’s easy to give yourself the protein your body needs through basic foods like chicken, yogurt, eggs, beans, and grains. However, we almost all struggle with nutrient deficiencies, and Shakeology is like an all in one dose of goodness.

Do you have low energy, cravings, and the temptation to binge on certain foods? This is a signal that your body might be lacking a certain nutrient or vitamin, especially if you’ve been eating less in order to lose weight.

Shakeology is a nutrient-dense meal replacement that provides you with an entire day’s worth of nutrition in less than 200 calories. It’s not about weight loss, because weight loss is a by-product of good nutrition! If you’re getting enough nutrients, your cravings will disappear, your energy will skyrocket, you will feel better and be able to be more active without feeling exhausted and drained at the end of the day.

Does it come in a vegan formula?

Yup! You can choose from six flavors.

Regular chocolate, vanilla, greenberry, and strawberry are formulated with the highest commercial grade whey protein isolate available.

Vegan chocolate and vegan tropical strawberry are made with a blend containing brown rice protein, pea protein, chia, amaranth, quinoa, and flax. Together, they are a complete protein containing all 9 essential amino acids including sufficient levels of lysine and methionine, which are often deficient in vegan diets.

My personal favorites are regular and vegan chocolate! The vegan formulas tend to be easier on your system if you have digestive issues, but the texture is a tiny bit grittier. I love to blend mine with frozen banana, almond milk, and ice for a milkshake consistency!

Why is it so dang expensive?

Alright, let’s talk about the elephant in the room: MONEYYY! The cost of Shakeology is the number one excuse or objection I hear when I’m talking with someone about my challenge groups.

You guys, let's put it this way: do you want to be cheap, or do you want to invest in your long term health and wellness?

You get what you pay for, and if you want to feel better, gain energy, and change your health from the inside out, you are going to have to stop treating your body like a discount outlet or garbage disposal!

Shift your mindset. How much would you pay for a juice? For a salad? For a multivitamin + probiotics + all the supplements your body needs to keep your immune and digestive systems humming? For your long term health? For the highest quality nutrition and superfoods available IN THE WORLD? I mean, cold-pressed lettuce water is over $6 at Starbucks, what the heck. Shakeology is only $4 a day, and I think that’s a steal.

Personally, I want to take the best possible care of myself so I can live a long and healthy life, not only for myself but for my family! I know I’m worth it, and the people I love deserve to get the best possible Anna too, so I'm going to do my best to put only the highest quality foods into my body :)

Investing in Shakeology = Investing in your health = Investing in YOU.

What’s up with all the ingredients?

Shakeology is an all-natural product created from whole foods. You know how juice cleanses are a fad right now? Well, think of Shakeo as dehydrated fiber, enzymes, protein, probiotics, etc etc etc. It’s made from over 70 superfoods that are sustainably sourced from around the globe and then carefully dehydrated to preserve their nutritional value.

Shakeology does NOT include artificial sweeteners, artificial flavors, soy, or fillers.

There’s literally nothing else like it out there on the market!

I already eat healthy, why do I need a supplement?

So here’s the thing. Even when you’re eating super healthy, you can still be nutrient deficient, because its almost impossible to get all the vitamins and nutrients your body needs without eating bushels and bushels of food. Not to mention the benefits your immune and digestive systems get along with it. I don’t take any other multivitamin or supplement, and I haven’t had to spend money on cold medicine since I started drinking Shakeo. It doesn’t replace good nutrition, but it will guarantee that you’re giving your body what it needs.

Here are just a few of the benefits you’ll see and feel from making Shakeo a daily part of your routine:

  • Build and repair muscles
  • Support healthy blood sugar levels (as measured by HbA1C)
  • Support healthy skin, hair, and nails
  • Provide the body with vitamins and minerals
  • Support a healthy immune system
  • Fight free radical damage
  • Support healthy digestion
  • Support regularity
  • Increase the absorption of nutrients

What if I don’t like it? Can I get a refund?

Beachbody offers a 30 day “bottom of the bag” guarantee, so you can return it for a full refund if you don’t like it! I recommend that you give it a shot for at least 2 weeks, since sometimes it takes your system a while to adapt to the high density of fiber and nutrients.

Why do you require Shakeology for your challenge groups?

I do require all my Challenge Group members to drink it everyday because it's a guaranteed way to see and feel results....even if life gets crazy and you fall off the workout wagon. I want you to commit to yourself as much as I commit to you as your coach! If you don’t believe you’re worth the investment, then it will be hard to believe that you're worth changing your own life.

Nutrition is SO crucial when it comes to meeting health and fitness goals, whether you want to lose weight or gain weight.

As a Beachbody coach, I’ve chosen to run my coaching practice in a more holistic, personal, and heart-centered way. As such, I do not “sell” or distribute Shakeology. You’re welcome to order sample packets or a supply from me (shoot me an email to make me your free coach!), but my focus is supporting women through their health and weight loss journeys by providing virtual group accountability and one on one email coaching. I'll give you encouragement and the emotional support that you need when you're literally re-inventing yourself, breaking up with the old you and setting new limits for what you're capable of achieving. You can read more about my coaching philosophy here!

In a nutshell, Shakeology makes it easy to deal with cravings, make sure your body is getting all the nutrients and vitamins it needs for optimal energy, and will help keep you on track. it’s fast, it’s easy, delicious, and it’s a no-brainer.

Don’t just take my word for it…

Raves and reviews!

"I was nervous about the price of shakeology, but if you break it down that's $32.50 a week - What I would easily spend in one nights' dinner & drinks out. Besides the break down, it's worth it. I've tried so many shakes and I can't handle protein shakes. But I literally crave Shakeology, because I enjoy it and associate it as a "treat" - it rids me of my sweet tooth. It gives me a clean energy. I don't have "bouncing off the walls" energy, but I feel like I can sustain anything and I am more than willing to push myself to complete and not wimp out. It just truly fuels my body to naturally be prepared for my workout. It curbs my appetite because it has all the nutrients and things I need in one shaker bottle, I can drink while I'm driving and be fine until my first snack at lunch!"

-Claudia M.

I absolutely love Shakeology. Both my Fibromyalgia and Neurologist doctors were impressed with the natural ingredients used in Shakeology. I have tried a lot of different protein powders and Shakeology is hands down the best I have ever used. I am a new Shakeology fan! I was not completely believing all the hype I was hearing about it. I kinda thought it was just another over priced protein powder. OMGoodness!!! It is THE best protein powder I have ever had! My cravings have been under control, and talk about energy! WOW, it is out of this world! Best of all because I have so much energy during the day I have found that I am sleeping better at night. I have been getting on average 7.5 hours of sleep every night which is wonderful for someone who has been a chronic insomniac since I was a teenager. I really could go on and on about all of this but bottom line is it works!
— Teresa
My energy is crazy through the roof, and I am always more steady in my moods when I drink it. Is that weird? I swear it helps keep me sane!
It’s practically dessert. The fact that is has all of these nutrients and benefits is just icing on the cake! I LOVE that it has probiotics. A lot of people don’t realize how important it is to have a healthy digestive system, especially when trying to lose weight. Probiotics are the good bacteria that keep your immune system strong and get rid of all the crud in your gut. Kind of like your first line of defense!
— Ally
I recently developed a slight lactose sensitivity issue so the lactase actually helps by body digest lactose when I have my once a week dairy product! (sorry can’t live without cheese ;)) since drinking shakeology I’ve noticed a huge energy surge when I drink it. I don’t even need coffee, but I still drink it because it tastes good and it’s comforting haha. but it’s also super quick and easy to make and super portable.
— Katie
I’m going to be honest - I was superrrr skeptical. Now, I can’t imagine not drinking Shakeo every day! On the days I don’t have Shakeo, I can totally tell a difference. It reduces all of my cravings and just makes me feel good! I used to take multivitamins and extra B12 because of a B12 deficiency and now don’t take any of that thanks to Shakeo!
— Maggie
I’ve been drinking Shakeology since October and I have noticed a HUGE reduction to my sugar cravings, which used to be a big problem for me. I honestly very rarely have days that I crave dessert, and at that, feel the need to give in. I’d rather splurge on other foods if I’m going to allow myself a treat!
— Emily

"I absolutely love it. I too come from a traditional protein powder place and the difference is amazing. I definitely feel like it helps with cravings and I have even found myself drinking my daily shake because I am craving chocolate. It is definitely more filling than regular protein or any other meal replacement shake I've tried. I was nervous about it (more about whether it was really good enough to be worth the cost) so I asked a couple friends, one with a degree in nutrition (she recommended it) and another who is like you, only eating natural and organic- I remember her reading the label like a book during our lunch hour. She then proceeded to do research on her own and come back with good things and wanted to buy some for herself. I would say do more research on it for yourself rather than just listen to a website (or even us!)."

"As a dietitian, I was intrigued by the fact that this shake is not just protein, but contains antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, superfoods, and probiotics (my best friends). The fact that it is made from high quality ingredients motivated me to try it. All I can say now is…WOW. This drink is FABULOUS. It tastes amazing, fills my chocolate cravings to a "T", and keeps me full for hours. I could spout off all the ingredients beside protein that it has (vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, probiotics as discussed above), but instead, I’d like to talk about how it makes me feel. Shakeology makes me feel so energetic and ready for my day! Since drinking Shakeology, I have been scary regular, with no issues! That has never happened to me before in my 26 years of existence. Shakeology contains probiotics in a super-food form, which has helped my issues in that department. I have never felt this good taking OTC, super expensive probiotics. That alone is a reason enough for me to keep drinking Shakeology!"

I personally have been on PCOS medication, and it made me very sick but did take away my symptoms. Shakeo has taken away almost all of my PCOS symptoms and doesn't make me sick at all. Of the little research I've done, it's due in large part to the Maca Root, which works directly on the endocrine system where PCOS first starts to do the thing. Other than that, women with PCOS often have specific vitamin deficiencies (for me it was Vitamin D), and shakeo helps with those things as well. Even in the times that I've gone a week or two without drinking shakeology, I've noticed that my symptoms don't come back the way that they did when I was on medication and would stop taking it.

(I also saw my doctor about two weeks ago and she has been looking into shakeology as well and said that it seems to be working and told me to keep going and forego meds, so obviously it's doing something right!)

My Doctor told me that I had several nutrient deficiencies as well as Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, which is, simply put, the earlier signs of hypothyroidism. My doctor basically told me to take vitamins, eat a paleo diet and hopefully that would slow down the development of hypothyroidism.

In January I started drinking Shakeology every single day. I also stopped my vitamins since I knew Shakeology had more than enough nutrients and I didn’t want to over-dose with anything. I visited my doctor again, got more blood tests done and in late March found out that ALL of my nutrient deficiencies are GONE!!! AND – the best part: all of the indicators of hypothyroidism were back in the normal range!

I am physically feeling a million times better than I was back in the Fall – my energy is up, I no longer have “brain fog” during the day, and I feel GOOD after my workouts as opposed to physically burned out.

So, back to the original question! Is it worth it? I think so, but I simply want to share my personal opinion and the stories of my clients and friends. The final decision is up to you! Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or want to learn more. I'd love to help you work towards your health and fitness goals!
